Patrolman Jeffery G. Casner, age 21, was struck and killed by a drunken driver while directing traffic at the scene of a prior, nighttime crash on the Berlin Turnpike (Route 5), Connecticut.

Officer Casner had served with the Berlin Police Department for only three months prior to this tragic event.
The driver responsible was sentenced to 16 months in jail but was killed in a motorcycle crash the weekend before he was due to begin his prison sentence.
Officer Casner was survived by his parents, brother, and two sisters. His brother was also a Berlin police officer at the time of his death and was on duty the night Jefferey was killed.
On February 2, 2020, the Berlin CT PD published the following on their Facebook page: “35 years ago today, Officer Jeffrey G. Casner gave the ultimate sacrifice. The Berlin Police Department, the Berlin Community and the greater law enforcement community will never forget. We remember our brother, Officer Jeffrey G. Casner, and the sacrifice he made, today and every day. Rest easy, hero.”
