Not wearing a seatbelt can result in ejection from the vehicle and a horrendous, pointless death

Since the beginning of 2020 there have been nine fatal incidents on South Dakota highways. Six of these fatalities resulted specifically from people not wearing their seatbelts, and then being ejected out of their cars onto the road or surrounding terrain, where they died…

Currently in South Dakota, not wearing a seatbelt is not a primary offense.  Nor is it state law for adult passengers riding in the back of a vehicle to wear safety belts…

Ironically, whoever briefed the photographer for the above Wikimedia Commons photograph did not know enough about safety to have the parking brake set or the head restraint correctly adjusted, but that is a subject for another post!
