About 11:20am on March 13, 2019, while out of his patrol car in a blizzard, Corporal Daniel Groves of the Colorado State Patrol was struck by a vehicle which was traveling too fast for conditions and slid off the road.

Moments earlier, Corporal Groves had stopped near mile marker 47 on westbound Interstate 76 near Roggen, Colorado, to assist a motorist whose vehicle had slid off the roadway earlier.
He was transported to Platte Valley Medical Center but was declared deceased a short while after arrival.
Corporal Groves had over 12 years’ service, having entered the Patrol on July 16, 2007.
The driver of the car that hit and killed Corporal Groves was John Carpenter, age 59, of Centennial. In December, 2019, Carpenter was sentenced to 90 days’ jail time, 8.5 years of supervised probation, and 850 hours of community service, after previously pleading guilty to failing to exercise due care, causing death (felony).
