On March 17, 1970, NYSP Trooper Richard L. Weltz, age 30, lost his life in a one-car crash when his vehicle left the road on Route 219 in Hamburg.

Trooper Weltz was returning from a pistol match in which he represented the New York State Police. He had won numerous national and international awards for marksmanship during his assignment to the pistol team.
Trooper Weltz joined the Division on June 18, 1964 and served in Troop D until he transferred to Troop A. He was stationed at Athol Springs at the time of his death.
