At 8:30pm on Saturday, March 21, 2020, Police Officer Kaia Grant, aged 33, of the Springdale Police Department, Ohio, was run down by an armed and allegedly suicidal driver.
The pursuit began in a neighboring jurisdiction when officers attempted to stop the subject. The pursuit proceeded onto I-275 where Officer Grant and a police sergeant were preparing to deploy stop sticks near State Route 4. It is alleged that the driver intentionally swerved toward them, striking them both.
Officer Grant was flown to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Sgt. Andrew Davis was injured in the crash and was taken to UC West Chester Hospital from where he has since been released.
According to WLWT5, dispatch said at least 30 [law enforcement] cars were involved in the chase.
The subject Terry Blankenship is in the hospital in serious condition and is in police custody. A firearm was recovered from the scene, police said. Charges are pending upon his release from the hospital.
Officer Grant had served with the Springdale Police Department (just north of Cincinnati) for eight years. She is survived by her parents.
