NTSB Report into the 2019 fatal collision of a Tesla Model 3 car with a semi-tractor trailer, FL

Highway Accident Brief 20/01 details the NTSB’s investigation of the collision of a 2018 Tesla Model 3 car with a 2019 International semi-tractor trailer on U.S. Highway 441 in Delray Beach, in which the 50-year-old driver of the car died. The 45-year-old truck driver was uninjured.

Automated systems need stronger safeguards to keep drivers focused on the road

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety [IIHS] has issued a set of research-based safety recommendations on the design of partially automated driving systems. The guidelines emphasize how to keep drivers focused on the road even as the vehicle does more of the work.

Several Level 2 systems, such as the one in this Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class, can already execute lane changes automatically, but IIHS researchers recommend against enabling that feature.
