Seat belts in the back seat, and the ‘backseat bullet’

Sadly, a lot of people believe that if they choose not to wear a seatbelt, the only person they can hurt would be themselves, but nothing could be farther from the truth… in more ways than one.

Perhaps it is for this reason that America is once again not just “late to the game” in terms of compulsory seatbelt use, but in fact last to the game. Every other developed nation in the world has had mandatory seatbelt use in all seats in cars for many years. Tragically, this is undoubtedly just one of the many reasons why a much higher rate of people are killed in road crashes in the USA than in virtually any other wealthy nation on the planet.

Surely this cannot be what any reasonable American person would want?

And here’s another example of how someone in the rear seat, not wearing a seatbelt, can either maim or kill themselves or do the same to another person in the car.

There is, of course, one other very cruel outcome when a person is needlessly killed because that person or someone else in their car was not wearing a seatbelt.

As just one example from millions, Princess Diana died specifically because she and others in her chauffeur-driven car were not wearing seatbelts, and in doing so she left her two young sons without a mother.

It is stunning how many people never even pause to imagine the tragedy and heartbreak they can cause to their own loved ones by not taking care of their own safety — and that is the second way to badly harm someone else by not wearing a seatbelt.
